Scoring Guidelines for Judges

You will rate each demo entry in three areas:

  1. Technical
  2. Artistic
  3. Wow and "Coolness" Factors

For the technical area, you will judge how fast and complex the audiovisual effects are combined and executed. The other two areas are subjective. For the artistic area, you will rates the demo's sense of beauty, conveyed through its music, fluidity, and atmosphere. The wow and coolness factors are actually two separate but related factors. The wow factor is how pleasantly surprised you were when you watched the demo due to its originality. The coolness factor is how impressed you were with the demo overall, and how likely you are to watch the demo again for the awesome experience. You will rate each of the areas by assigning a score on a scale from 1 to 5 as briefly explained below:

5 = excellent, 4 = very good, 3 = good, 2 = okay, 1 = sucks

Please don't give a 5 unless it's really excellent and nearing perfection. On the other hand, you should give a 1 if the demo is of poor quality. Namevoting (scoring on the basis on the demo author's previous reputation) is not allowed. Demoscene judges: Please keep in mind that these effects were coded without the use of assembly language (though it was not strictly required) when scoring for the technical section.

In the cases where the outputted sound detracts more than enhances the demo (regardless of reason), the demo should be run with -NOSOUND and judging should proceed as if the demo had no sound to begin with. This case should be noted in the comments section for the demo.

Judge's Comments for...

Qasir:

-An amazing raytracer and a great soundtrack but the framerate wasn't too impressive.

-Tech might have been 5, but I had to run it with -nosound param, because the sound was crap otherwise.

-Nice little technical demo, not much originality though. The art seems to make up for the lack of effects. Was a bit short and the transitions between effects was lacking as well. A good effort though.

-Impressive! Has rhythm, good sound, at last a true demo!. The ball from inside is a fine idea. In the negative part the 3d engine misses some triangles and needs a little work in subpixel accuracy: the final skull seems to be made of rubber.

Optimus:

-A very diverse array of effects with a consistent framerate but it dwells way too long on each effect.

-Boring. Dotted scenes are too long. I was about to quit before the end.

-Lots of originality, very artistic, with nice transitions between effects. Way too much time spent on each effect, and the demo itself is simply way too long. Watching it again is rather boring.

-A real plasma guru! This guy takes his time to design carefully the motion and the screen layouts. Too bad if then feels the need of doing a nasty intro and after that displays in his 3d engine some cubes, spheres, toruses, a beautiful sinus surface, a teapot and finally a cow !!. Just too long to be good. Someone said "Small is beautiful"..

Tor:

-The fractal zoomer was very impressive.

-Simple, old effects, but used nicely. Nice.

-Obviously rushed. The mandelbrot zoomer was interesting, but a bit grainy. It seems like there was a palette missing, especially with the blob effects. Overall, just looks like a bunch of various rushed effects thrown together. Not very coherent. Still worth a look.

-An impressive fractal zoomer, then two more effects that seem a transition to anything great, but there is only the final flag. It leaves you expecting for more... Seems unfinished.

Sane:

-At least it doesn't use PRINT =)

-Too short.

-Not worth watching. Looks like a joke entry.

-This is namevoting, but had to say it: The day SANE starts to work hard, probably he will make beautiful demos..... Sound didn't work for me.
